JCB Dieselmax does it!
Achieves new world land speed record with record two-way run of 328.767 mph
Today driver Andy Green drove the JCB Dieselmax to a new world land speed record for diesel-powered cars by achieving an average speed of 328.767 mph on two runs. The JCB Dieselmax team spent the last two days replacing the car's 600-bhp practice engines with 750-bhp "record" versions. Driver Andy Green piloted the car for both runs reaching 324 mph on the first run and 333 mph on the second. The new record, which is still subject to official confirmation, breaks the previous record of 236 mph set in 1973 by nearly, but not quite, 100 mph. Green believes there's still more left in the Dieselmax and the team will be tinkering with the car before making additional runs later in the week.

I got some great shots of the JCB team doing their thing during Speed Week. The Dieselmax team was having some problems setting up the car for the salt and were gradually working their way up and had planned all along to really go for the record the week or so after Speed Week.
Be sure to check out their push vehicle, a JCB tractor that is required for many vehicles out on the salt with such tall gearing.

Big Deal !
Tony Shumacher (NHRA Top Fuel Dragster) ran 333.08 mph in 4.523 SECONDS in quarter mile!!!! This was back 2001.

#2: Er... in one direction, er... over a quarter mile, er... with funny fuel, er... there's no real comparison. I went faster yesterday in a Boing 737, so what's your point?

S, you said it yourself...... Top Fuel.
This effort was in a diesel powered vehicle which has a much different power envelope than a top fuel dragster. It's a different way of going fast you know. You might as well have said "Big Deal, Lt. Col John Stapp achieved 634 MPH without a vehicle by jumping out of a balloon at the edge of space". (true story)

Wasn't it Joseph Kittinger that made the big balloon drops? 614mph in freefall is hard for me to wrap my brain around. I've seen 180mph in a stand in freefall, and the relative wind is screaming past. It's like being in a hurricane. I'm planning on doing a high altitude jump one day (from 30K, which hardly compares).
That said, maybe I'm jaded, but 329mph just doesn't seem all that fast to me.

There's nothing jet about it. There's no rockets strapped to the car. That's all wheel driven and nothing else. The point is that he broke a 30 year diesel land speed record and you didn't. I'd like to see you do the same thing with your pickup truck. Smartass.

#4: #7 is correct Joseph Kittinger did achieve 614 mph. He jumped from 102,000 ft and was free-falling for 4.5 minutes! The air there is VERY thin, so it's the equivalent of 120 mph in the lower atmosphere. (terminal velocity). Stapp ran a research effort into human tolerance for deceleration, sustaining ~45g! He was strapped into rocket sleds for these tests. He's also partial responsible for seat belts too. Both were very brave (and a little crazy?)

GT, Kittinger was crazy because he did the jump with a tear in his glove, risking all sorts of injuries including death since he was basically in a space suit.
As for JCB Dieselmax, beautiful car and great job! Diesel needs more publicity in the US. Achievments like this from JCB and those from Audi are excellent examples that should help shift the American perspectives on diesel.
